The creative brewers at Maisel & Friends and BrauBeviale, the most important capital goods trade fair for the beverage industry, launched the competition for hobby and home brewers back in 2018, and since then the number of participants has increased year after year. In 2021, organizers were able to set an all-time record as hobby and home brewers from near and far submitted 160 beers to the competition theme of "West Coast IPA." To determine the winning beer, a top-class expert jury of 13 brewmasters, beer sommeliers and representatives of the trade press conducted a blind tasting lasting several hours in May 2021 and judged the beers' appearance, aroma, taste, bitterness, recency and personal impression.

Winner is brewer at Jopen Brouwerij (Netherlands).
The winner of the fourth amateur brewer competition organized by Maisel & Friends and BrauBeviale is Fernando Coppi. The native Brazilian has been brewing beer at home for three years and is overjoyed to have won first place. Unfortunately, Fernando Coppi was unable to come to Maisel & Friends for the brew day, as he is now employed as a brewer at the internationally renowned Jopen Brouwerij in the Netherlands.

The winning beer shines beautifully honey-colored in the glass with a slight cloudiness and a creamy head. As the name Tropical Coast suggests, the West Coast IPA has an intense hoppy fruit aroma that won over the judges from the start. With the first sip, the hop play reveals itself to the taste buds, reminiscent of a tropical fruit basket. The tongue first perceives passion fruit, apricot, orange and pineapple notes, accompanied by pleasant bitter notes of orange and citrus peel. A dominant and style-typical bitterness perfectly rounds out the IPA with a wonderful dry finish.
