BLEFA Joins Forces to Launch Steel Keg Association

“Steel kegs are reusable and have a lifespan of decades that guarantee optimum freshness and the best taste of the beverages stored in them, whether beer,wine, soft drinks or table water. The kegs run smoothly on filling and cleaning equipment and are easy to handle in bars and restaurants,” says BLEFA Managing Director Alexander Brand. To give the benefits of steel kegs to breweries and beverage companies as well as bars and restaurants a unified voice, BLEFA currently joined forces with other leading global keg supply chain companies to launch the new Steel Keg Association (SKA).

Need an example? “Take beer enjoyed in bars and restaurants in the U.S., kegs presently remove about half of all single-use beer containers from the bar / restaurant waste stream each year, that’s approximately 6 billion containers... converting the other half to draft removes a combined 12+ billion single-use containers. That’s a goal worth raising a pint to, and we’re encouraging others to join in“, says Dan Vorlage, SKA Executive Director and MicroStar Logistics VP of Global Marketing. So cheers to decades of reusability and hopefully a fast goodbye to the next 6 billion containers piling up on landfills – and even more worldwide.

In the U.S., compared to single use containers, steel kegs save over 400,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases and keep roughly 500,000 tons of packaging out of landfills each year”, says Kyle Tanger, Managing Director in Deloitte’s U.S. sustainability practice.

Kegs are the ultimate reusable containers – and a sustainable and trusted brand ambassador for decades. Beverage companies such as breweries and wineries can have their kegs personalized and create a long-lasting brand presence. Name and graphics elements can be applied, amongst others, onto steel strips cut from coils, as silk screen printing, electrochemical signature or with stickers or laser inscription.
