On December 19, the European Commission decided to ban the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials.

The EU member states had previously supported the EU Commission's proposal.
BPA is already banned in the EU for baby bottles and similar products. After a transitional period of 18 months, it may no longer be used in other packaging that comes into contact with food or drinks. This includes, for example, the coating of metal cans and the use in reusable plastic drinks bottles.
