News General news
Sales of container glass amounted to around 1.94 million tons in the first half of 2024, a decrease of 4.4% compared to the same period of the previous year. While there was slight growth in Germany, sales abroad continued to decline.

Sales of beverage bottles fall
Sales in the beverage bottle segment declined in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year, falling by 3.2%. A look at the sub-segments shows a decline in sales in the beer and spirits (minus 2.7%), wine and sparkling wine (minus 3.0%) and non-alcoholic beverages water, milk and juice (minus 6.1%) segments. The downward trend of the previous year thus continued, but not as strongly.
Sales of packaging glass for food continue to decline
The packaging glass for food and packaging glass for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics segment also closed the first half of 2024 with a negative sales trend of minus 7.0%. The sub-segments developed similarly: sales of packaging glass for food without OGS (fruit, vegetables and preserves) fell by 9.6% in the first half of 2024. The packaging glass with OGSsub-segment recorded a decline of 3.7% compared to the same period last year.
“Unfortunately, the hoped-for noticeable recovery of the container glass market did not yet materialize in the first half of 2024. We are cautiously optimistic that we were able to record sales growth in some segments in Germany in the first half of the year. We hope that this trend will continue and that sales will be characterized by growth in the second half of 2024,” comments Dr. Johann Overath, Managing Director of the Bundesverband Glasindustrie e. V. (Federal Association of the German Glass Industry).
