Germany's best young brewer comes from Upper Franconia

In an examination lasting several hours, consisting of theory, technical calculations and several practical stations, the new national winner was determined at the German brewing and malting championship on November 12, 2024. The host brewery was Winkler Bräu in Velburg-Lengenfeld.
The state winners from Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and North Rhine-Westphalia took part:
- Johannes Hartmann, trained at Brauerei-Gasthof Kundmüller in Viereth-Trunstadt (state winner Bavaria)
- Maximilian Pfister, trained at Braumanufaktur Forsthaus Templin in Potsdam (Brandenburg state winner)
- Jonathan Röhrs, trained at Wildwuchs Brauwerk in Hamburg (state winner Hamburg)
- Joshua Keck, trained at Braumanufaktur Ludwigslust in Ludwigslust (state winner Mecklenburg-Vorpommern)
- Lara-Marleen Jürgens, trained at Pott's Brauerei in Oelde (state winner North Rhine-Westphalia)
As part of the national competition, the five young brewers faced the extensive tasks. Not only theoretical knowledge was tested. The participants also had to demonstrate their practical skills in several stations in the brewhouse, in the fermentation cellar and on the dispensing system. Their performance was assessed by an independent panel of experts.
In the end, the decision was extremely close: Johannes Hartmann won the title of “Best Young Brewer in Germany” by just a few points. As the 2024 national winner, he will represent the brewing and malting trade at the closing ceremony of the German Craft Skills Championships in Berlin at the beginning of December. There he will be honored once again by the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH) together with the national winners of 130 other craft trades.
The aim of the skills competitions is to demonstrate the importance of vocational training for brewers and maltsters, particularly in medium-sized breweries. In addition, talented young brewers are to be supported in their professional development.
