A finish that pops!
Karl Knauer shows how a matt film finish can shine with a high-quality gift box developed and manufactured by the packaging specialist for the Austrian wine and sparkling wine producer Schlumberger. The packaging, with an elegant cord handle, impresses with its striking appearance as well as its distinctive quality and scratch resistant finish.
Vibrant matt/gloss effects
“Just like the Schlumberger Sparkling Brut contained inside the new gift box, the packaging needed to be of premium quality and leave a lasting impression,” says Thomas Schultheiß, Key Account Manager at Karl Knauer KG, summing up the design brief given at the start of the packaging expert's collaboration with the Vienna-based company. Working closely with the Schlumberger team, the packaging specialist developed a durable gift box that plays with an elaborate black/gold design and matt/gloss effects. The particular challenge for this project: designing the box so that it can be transported or shipped in outer packaging without becoming damaged, i.e. without scratches occurring. When the primary material involved is matt black cardboard, this can only be achieved through applying expert knowledge and an additional protective layer. Consequently, the cardboard used by Karl Knauer is first printed in black and then laminated with a scratch-resistant matt film layer before the design is applied using gold foil embossing and a black UV gloss varnish. As a final touch, the intricately produced packaging is rounded off with an elegant, colour-matched cord handle.
“We can imagine that many a gift box will be kept by its recipient long after the bottle presented inside has gone. It’s an attractive and eye-catching object that serves as a special memento of the occasion and the sparkling moments associated with enjoying the Schlumberger Sparkling Brut,” says Thomas Schultheiß. “And in conveying such a positive brand message the packaging will achieve exactly what we were aiming for during development.”
