Heatwave and holidays: Mineral springs ask for quick return of empties

#BringDeinLeergut - Information campaign on reusable bottles and crates
The summer temperatures are causing sales peaks and the holiday season means that the empty returnable bottles and crates for mineral water and mineral water soft drinks are only being returned with a delay. The Genossenschaft Deutscher Brunnen (GDB) as the responsible body for the well-known reusable system is therefore asking consumers to return the empties promptly, especially before the upcoming summer holidays.
"With the high temperatures of the past few weeks, mineral water is particularly popular and significantly more is sold than the annual average," explains Markus Wolff, board member of the GDB. "At the same time, however, the return of empties is delayed, partly because the holiday season has begun. Just as in the hot summers of the past years, we therefore ask consumers to return the empties as quickly as possible so that the returnable systems can function smoothly."
The GDB underlines that the mineral water industry in Germany does not see any bottlenecks in the supply of Germany's most popular natural product. The most important reason for this is that the German mineral springs have a wide mix of packaging. "Mineral water is available in the industry-wide GDB system in glass and PET returnable as well as PETCYCLE recyclable bottles," explains Wolff. "Therefore, we can act flexibly and ensure the supply of mineral water even during sales peaks - as is the case at the moment."
Campaign launch: #BringDeinLeergut
In addition, says Wolff, some purchasing habits have changed in recent years. "Since the pandemic, there are households that buy less often, but in larger quantities. This also delays the return of reusable containers."
For this reason, GDB is launching the information campaign #BringDeinLeergut today. The website www.bring-dein-leergut.de provides information on many aspects of reusable packaging. The campaign will gain reach through accompanying communication with online ads and via social media channels.
