February 22nd is a very special day for cocktail lovers in the USA: National Margarita Day is celebrated in honor of probably the most famous tequila cocktail.

What is a Margarita cocktail?
A classic Margarita consists of tequila, lime juice, and triple sec. The mixing ratio according to the International Bartenders Association (IBA): 50% tequila, 29% Cointreau, and 21% freshly squeezed lime juice. The ingredients are shaken with ice, strained into a cocktail glass with a salt rim, and the refreshing drink is ready.
The history of the Margarita cocktail
Where exactly the Margarita was invented is not entirely clear. It probably came into bars sometime in the 1930s or 1940s. One theory suggests that the drink first appeared in 1937 in the "Cafe Royal Cocktail Book" as "Picador" with tequila, Cointreau, and lime.
Another legend tells that Carlos "Danny" Herrera created the cocktail in his restaurant for the dancer Marjorie King, who could not tolerate any alcohol except tequila. He named the drink "Margarita," the Spanish version of Marjorie.
Over time, many variations of the Margarita recipe have emerged
Whether on the rocks, frozen, fruity, spicy, or with vegetables - the Margarita is indispensable in the cocktail world. It is a perennial favorite in Mexican-inspired restaurants worldwide.
Even the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington has a Margarita machine in its collection. No wonder the drink has been given its own honorary day.
National Margarita Day is not only meant to remind us of the popular cocktail but also to whet our appetite for summer. Because for many, the refreshing drink is associated with memories of sun, beach, and palm trees. And who wouldn't want to dream of warmer days in February?
