Positive effects of naturally cloudy apple juice on intestinal health discovered
News General news
An interdisciplinary research project conducted by the German Sport University Cologne, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover and the University of Vienna has discovered that drinking naturally cloudy apple juice can have positive effects on intestinal health, both in everyday life and after physical exertion.
The intestine influences the entire immune system of the body. On the one hand it has to absorb nutrients, on the other hand it has to act as a barrier and ward off bacteria. This property is known as the intestinal barrier. An intact intestinal barrier is not only of central importance for the health of the intestine, but also for the entire organism and contributes significantly to general well-being, the prevention of diseases and the maintenance of optimal physical and mental health.
The research project, led by Prof Dr Dr Patrick Diel and Prof Dr Tuba Esatbeyoglu, investigated how the matrix of naturally cloudy apple juice influences the permeability of the intestinal barrier and associated inflammatory processes in the body. Both human medical intervention studies and in vitro investigations at the molecular level were carried out.
The results of the study emphasise the already known positive effects of naturally cloudy apple juice spritzers as natural regeneration drinks after physical exertion. In addition to the rehydrating effect, they also favour the regeneration of the intestines and inhibit inflammatory processes after physical activity.
The research project was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and took place in co-operation between the German Sport University Cologne and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University Hanover.
