Urinary tract infections are a common disease caused by bacteria. Many people are familiar with the typical symptoms (frequent urination combined with stabbing pain or burning), and quite a few people suffer from them repeatedly. For many years, various studies have been looking into the extent to which the consumption of cranberries in food and drink can have a positive influence on the containment of urinary tract infections. The Cochrane Library, an online library of the international organization Cochrane, which examines scientific evidence on questions from all areas of healthcare, has now published new study results on the topic. After analyzing 50 studies with more than 8,800 subjects, the author concludes that cranberry can be effective, especially for recurrent urinary tract infections in women and children. This is particularly likely if the fruit is taken prophylactically and regularly.

How cranberries work
In a urinary tract infection, bacteria, primarily coli and intestinal bacteria, settle in the mucous membranes of the bladder. These bacteria have fimbriae, a type of cilia, with which they attach to the mucous membrane. According to the study, the special proanthocyanidins in cranberries (also known as cranberries) can prevent these bacteria from adhering to the mucous membrane with the fimbriae. Instead, they are flushed out with the urine. The results of the studies carried out therefore suggest that women with recurrent urinary tract infections can certainly benefit from cranberry products. "New evidence can lead to new findings. In this case, the new evidence shows that cranberry juice may well prevent urinary tract infections in susceptible people," comments senior author Professor Dr. Jonathan Craig from Flinders University, Australia, on the results.
