Sales growth in the first half of 2022 for the German container glass industry
News General news
Container glass sales in tons increased by 5.4 percent in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period last year. Developments in Germany and abroad were also positive. The trend toward the use of glass packaging is clearly continuing.
Rising sales in the beverage segment
Sales volumes in the beverage bottle segment rose by 6.3 percent in the first half of 2022. A look at the subsegments shows sales growth in the beer and spirits (5.1 percent) and wine and sparkling wine (6.3 percent) segments. Non-alcoholic beverages (water, milk and juice) also saw sales rise again, with an increase of 11.6 percent. After last year's declines, the segment appears to be recovering. One reason is likely to be the normalization of changed demand, as a result of the 2020 lockdown. Added to this are significantly higher temperatures in the months of April to June, which could be seen as an additional reason for stronger consumption of non-alcoholic beverages in particular.
Sales of packaging glass for food on the rise again
The segment of packaging glass for food and packaging glass for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics recovered from the previous year's decline in sales and closed the first half of 2022 with an increase of 3.4 percent. In this context, the sub-segments developed differently: sales of packaging glass for food without OGS (fruit, vegetables and canned sauces) declined by 1.7 percent. The sub-segment of packaging glass with OGS recorded significant growth of 10.7 percent.
"After the increase in sales in 2021, we see a further encouraging increase in sales in the first half of 2022. Among consumers, the trend towards using glass packaging is clearly continuing. Due to the tense current overall political and economic situation, container glass manufacturers have taken measures to ensure the supply of glass in the coming winter as well," said Dr. Johann Overath, Chief Executive Officer of the German Federal Association of the Glass Industry (Bundesverband Glasindustrie e. V.), commenting on the half-year results.
