In 1933, Prohibition, which had been introduced in the USA in 1920, was repealed. Breweries could now produce alcoholic beer again.
However, the nationwide distribution of beer in bottles and kegs in the USA is both inconvenient and expensive. George Newman is responsible for logistics at the Krueger Brewing Company in Newark, New Jersey, and is testing a new distribution method: in 1933, Krueger became the first brewery in the world to bottle its beer in tin cans.
There are still problems that need to be solved: A special tool is needed to open the can and the metal of the can changes the flavour of the beer, which is preserved by heating, in an unpleasant way. But on 24 January 1935, the Krueger Brewing Company is able to launch the first coated beer cans on the market. German beer drinkers were not able to drink the first barley juice from a can until 1951.
Matthias Kliemt, a qualified beer sommelier, says: "The can is the best packaging next to the keg, much better than a bottle, because it is impermeable to light and the seal is absolutely tight."
